The federal registry only shows providers who registered a National Provider Identifier (NPI) at that address. Hearing aid specialists who don't bill insurance often have none, and store staff aren't always linked to the store's NPI. So this shows what the registry shows, not a staffing audit. Ask any location who will test and fit you, and what license they hold.

Chain or independent: what to ask either one

  • Will you do a full hearing test, including speech testing, and show me the results?
  • Will you check the fit with real-ear measurement?
  • How long is the trial period, and which fees aren't refundable?
  • Which hearing aid makers do you sell, and how many follow-up visits are included?

See Costco vs Miracle-Ear vs Beltone vs an independent audiologist for prices and trial terms side by side. Our guide to choosing a hearing aid provider covers the questions in more detail.

Frequently asked questions

Which hearing aid chain has the most locations?

In the federal NPI registry, Miracle-Ear has the most, with 569 locations, followed by Northland Hearing Centers (553) and Beltone (217).

Do hearing aid chains have audiologists?

Some locations do. Across these chains the share of locations with an audiologist registered at the address ranges from 2% to 64%, compared with 52% of independent practices. Many chain locations are staffed by licensed hearing aid specialists.

Is a chain or an independent clinic better for hearing aids?

Neither is better by default. What matters most is a full hearing test, a fitting checked with real-ear measurement, a written trial period and follow-up visits. Ask any provider for those.
