How we build this directory

A directory is only as good as its data. Here's where ours comes from and what we do with it.

The source

Every listing starts in the CMS National Plan and Provider Enumeration System (NPPES), September 2026 release. NPPES is the federal registry that issues National Provider Identifiers (NPIs) to health care providers and organizations. CMS publishes it as a public file every month.

We include active records that list one of these provider types:

  • Audiologist, including assistive technology specialties
  • Audiologist–hearing aid fitter
  • Hearing instrument specialist
  • Hearing and speech clinic or center
  • Hearing aid equipment supplier

From records to listings

A listing is a practice location. We merge organization records registered at the same address under the same name, then attach the individual audiologists and hearing instrument specialists who list that address as their practice location. That's how a listing can say how many audiologists are registered there.

Clinicians with no organization record at their address appear as individual provider listings. When three or more clinicians share an address with no practice record, it's almost always a hospital or health-system department, so we leave those out rather than list a department under one person's name.

What we leave out

  • Records that haven't been updated in NPPES since before 2016, or that have no phone number, since they're the most likely to be out of date
  • Deactivated NPIs
  • Schools, school districts, government agencies and staffing companies
  • Speech-only clinics with no hearing professionals on record

Today the directory has 15,286 listings in 4,088 communities across all 50 states and DC.

City pages

A city gets its own page when it has at least 3 listings. Listings in smaller towns appear on their state page, so every listing is reachable without creating near-empty pages.

How services are described

For unclaimed listings, the services shown come from the provider types registered at the address. For example, a listing with a registered audiologist shows hearing evaluations. We don't guess at services the registry doesn't support, such as tinnitus programs or specific hearing aid brands. Practices that claim their listing can add those.

Distances

Distances in search results are measured between ZIP-code centers (US Census data), so treat them as approximate.

Known limits

NPPES depends on providers keeping their own records current, and closed practices aren't always deactivated. Always call ahead to confirm hours and that a practice is taking new patients. A listing isn't an endorsement, and we don't verify clinical quality.

Corrections and removals

Practices can claim their listing to correct details. Anyone can report a problem through the contact form. We act on confirmed corrections and removal requests within two business days.
